Privacy policy

TriviaQuiz.co ("we", "us", "the site") is an independent personality-quiz and trivia publication operated by The Imperfect Company. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what you can do about it. Questions: contact@triviaquiz.co.

The short version

  • We set a single anonymous fingerprint cookie so your quiz results follow you across sessions. You don't need an account to take quizzes.
  • If you sign up, we collect your email and any quiz results tied to your account. We never sell this data.
  • We use Google AdSense for ads, Stripe for subscription billing, Resend for email, Cloudinary for images, Plausible and Google Analytics for usage analytics, and Sentry for error reporting. Some of these are gated behind your cookie-consent choice.
  • You can request access, correction, or deletion of any personal data at contact@triviaquiz.co.

What we collect

Anonymous visitors

  • Fingerprint cookie (90-day expiry) — a random identifier so we can remember your in-progress quizzes and show you which packs you've already played. Not linked to your real identity unless you sign up.
  • Quiz responses — the answers you select during a quiz, the archetype you land on, and the timestamp. Stored with the fingerprint, not with your name.
  • Standard request data — IP address, user agent, referrer, page viewed. Used for analytics and abuse prevention. Aggregated quickly; not retained at the individual level beyond 30 days.

Registered users

  • Email address — required to create an account. Used for sign-in (magic link or Google OAuth), account-related notifications, and (with your opt-in) the newsletter.
  • Display name — auto-generated at signup (e.g., "OliveOtter-9673"); you can customize it. Shown on the leaderboard.
  • Account-tied quiz history — all takes attributed to your fingerprint at signup, plus any future quizzes. This is what builds your dossier and Compass analysis.
  • Points balance and transactions — for users who earn or redeem points.

Subscribers (paid Compass access)

  • Billing information — handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card details. We retain a customer ID, subscription status, and the last four digits of your card for billing-related support.

How we use it

  • To deliver the quizzes you take and the analysis they produce.
  • To recommend quizzes you haven't yet taken.
  • To remember your progress across sessions.
  • To send the emails you've opted into.
  • To process subscription billing and handle support.
  • To detect and prevent abuse, fraud, and harm.
  • To improve the site (anonymous, aggregated analytics).

We don't use your data for retargeting elsewhere on the internet, and we don't sell or rent it to data brokers.

How the personality analysis is generated

Your dossier and Compass analysis are synthesized by a large language model (currently Anthropic Claude) using your quiz results as input. The synthesis is generated server-side and cached against your account. Anthropic does not retain your data for model training under our agreement. The analysis is for self-reflection and entertainment — not a clinical assessment, career counseling, or psychological diagnosis.

Third-party services we use

  • Google AdSense — display ads. Gated behind cookie consent in regions where required.
  • Amazon Associates — affiliate product links. Clicks may set Amazon's tracking cookies. We earn a small commission on qualifying purchases.
  • BitLabs / Pollfish — optional survey gates (currently not active on production).
  • Stripe — subscription billing for the Compass paid tier.
  • Resend — transactional email (magic-link sign-in, billing receipts, newsletter).
  • Auth.js + Neon — authentication and database.
  • Cloudinary — image hosting for some archetype portraits and product photos.
  • Plausible Analytics — privacy-friendly, cookie-free aggregate analytics.
  • Google Analytics (GA4) — additional analytics. Gated behind cookie consent in regions where required.
  • Anthropic Claude API — generates the personality analysis content. Subject to their data-handling policy; not used for model training.
  • OpenAI Image API (gpt-image-2) — generates archetype and product illustrations. Not used for any per-user generation; only for the editorial-asset pipeline.
  • Sentry — error and performance monitoring. Errors may include limited context about the action that triggered them; we do not include personal data in error reports beyond user IDs needed to reproduce issues.

Cookies

We use three categories of cookies:

  • Essential — fingerprint, session, CSRF. These are always set; the site doesn't work without them.
  • Analytics — Plausible (cookie-free by design) plus Google Analytics (cookie-based; gated by consent in regions where required).
  • Advertising — AdSense and (when active) BitLabs/Pollfish. Gated by consent in regions where required.

You can change your cookie preferences at any time on the cookie preferences page.

Your rights (GDPR, CCPA, and similar)

Depending on your jurisdiction, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correct it if it's inaccurate.
  • Delete it ("right to be forgotten").
  • Export it in a portable format.
  • Object to certain kinds of processing.
  • Withdraw consent for analytics/advertising cookies at any time.

To exercise any of these rights, email contact@triviaquiz.co from the address tied to your account. We'll respond within 30 days. For account deletion, we'll remove everything tied to your user ID within 7 days; anonymous activity tied to a fingerprint is automatically cleared when that cookie expires (90 days).

Children

TriviaQuiz.co is intended for users 16 and older. We don't knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16. If you believe a minor has signed up, email contact@triviaquiz.co and we'll delete the account.

Data retention

  • Active accounts: retained until you delete your account or are inactive for 3+ years (after which we'll notify you and delete if no response).
  • Anonymous fingerprint data: 90 days from last activity.
  • Subscription records: retained for the statutory period (7 years in most jurisdictions) for tax and chargeback purposes.
  • Logs and aggregate analytics: 30 days at the individual level, indefinitely at the aggregate level.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy occasionally. Material changes will be announced via email to registered users and via a banner on the site for at least 30 days. The "Effective" date at the top of this page reflects the current version.
